Beagle Puppies – An Excellent Hound!

Actually miniature foxhounds, beagle puppies are some of the most suited dogs to have as a family pet.  They are experts at taking to dog training, obeying commands with ease.  As hounds, beagles have an excellent sense of smell, but sometimes their nose gets them into trouble.  A beagle puppy will be mischievous and should never be allowed to roam free.

Beagles have short coats that are easily maintained with a weekly brushing, though these pups do tend to shed frequently.  This can be minimized with consistent bathing and brushing.

When buying a puppy, you should look for the important characteristics that suggest the beagle is healthy.  The beagle’s skull should be long and domed at the top, with ears set low.  The ears should be long, and the pup’s eyes should be large and wide set.  A beagle typically doesn’t exceed 15-16 inches in height.

Beagles do tend to bark due to their instinct toward the hunt.  However, most of the time, beagles should be cheerful and playful, making them great companions for young children.

This breed is small or medium in size and doesn’t require an extensive amount of food.  In fact, if your beagle doesn’t get the proper amount of exercise and is overfed, the breed is predisposed to be overweight, as are many dogs in the hound family.

So, in preparation for a beagle joining your household, you should be sure that you have the time to play with the puppy, as well as to walk your dog regularly for exercise.  You should also carefully measure the amount of dog food you allow your beagle to consume.

Overall, beagles are easy to care for, not being a “needy” or demanding breed.  They are non-aggressive and have a long life span, usually ranging between 12-16 years.  So, if you choose a beagle as your next puppy, you’ll have a companion for a long time to come.
