If you are in the market for a loving, patient dog, black lab puppies are an excellent choice.  Black labs are lively and sweet natured, and this breed is trustworthy and good with children.  They are playful puppies and especially enjoy the water, so it might be in your best interest to keep a “kiddie pool” for their occasional use.

Note that, if left to their own devices, lab puppies can get themselves into trouble easily, becoming destructive in their boredom.  This breed may also be cautious and shy around strangers unless they were put through dog training and socialized early on.

Labradors are popular pets, but they have a tendency toward hip dysplasia and eye disorders, so you should carefully monitor and maintain the health of your lab.

Labradors are watchdogs and tend to be alert, warning their owners of the possibility of dangers.  A Labrador can also be quite energetic, and though a lab that is sufficiently walked and exercised can do okay in an apartment, they are best kept in environments that have at least a moderately sized yard.

The breed will grow on average to be between 21-24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh somewhere between 55-75 pounds.  Life expectancy for the Labrador is around 10-12 years on average, so keep that in mind when looking at puppies for sale.  Among the necessary dog supplies are combs and brushes, as the short slick hair on a Labrador should be brushed regularly. 

There is more than one type of lab, so be sure of what you are getting when you purchase the dog.  The field line of labs tend to be more high strung and energetic, while the show line grows to be heavier and easy going.  The best choice is often a mixture of the two.  Be sure to purchase your black labrador from a reputable dog breeder, as these are the sources most knowledgeable on the animals.
