Border Collie Puppies – A Round Up!

Border collie puppies are very intelligent but are not the best choice of dog for everyone.  A Border collie puppy needs lots of affection and some sort of job to accomplish in order to be truly happy.  This breed is a working dog, originally used for herding purposes, and they are still great working dogs with which farmers enjoy healthy relationships today.

When looking at puppies for sale, take into consideration your lifestyle and home environment.  Because of their dominant attitude and herding instincts, Border collies can be snappy with small children, and their sensitive hearing can make these dogs unhappy in an environment where babies are present.  Therefore, these dogs are not the best choice for those raising a family.

Also, if left alone for long periods of time, Border collies can become bored or even neurotic, and these dogs will become destructive if unhappy.  If you do not have a lot of time to spend with a dog, one of these puppies is not the best choice for you.

Dog food with a special formula for highly active dogs should be considered for this breed, and an owner who chooses a Border collie should provide not only physical but mental exercise for the pet, as these dogs are unhappy when not challenged.

Border collies live anywhere from about 12-15 years on average and tend to be very hardy, healthy dogs.  Eye disease is the most common ailment to the breed, though some are affected by hip dysplasia, and others have been known to be allergic to fleas or can be prone to epilepsy and deafness.

If you have the time and patience to be a good owner for a Border collie, they are extremely fun to have around, and you will find a rewarding relationship with your pet.  But if you can’t spend ample time with your dog, you may want to consider a less high-maintenance breed.
