Boxer Dogs – A Faithful Friend!

Boxer dogs originated in Germany sometime around the late 1800’s or early 1900’s.  This breed of dog dates back to ancestors who were used for dog fighting and bull baiting.

The boxer dog tends to be a very muscular breed, with taut skin showing off the developed muscles.  Its gait is firm and self-assured.  An alert and fearless breed of dog, the boxer is extremely playful and enjoys being with family and friends.

Though the boxer is wary of strangers, the breed tends to be alert and curious, getting to know new people quickly.  If friendly with the dog, a boxer will respond with love and kindness immediately.  However, if threatened, these canines are fearless.

The loyalty of a boxer means that it is well-suited to police work, never turning on an owner unless mistreated.  The boxer originated through a cross between Bulldogs, Great Danes, and other breeds in Germany at the time.  It is considered a working dog, and this breed requires enough exercise and dog food to maintain its muscularity.

As an active dog, it will not tolerate being confined to small spaces for long periods of time, needing opportunity to stretch its sturdy legs.

Dog training is easily handled, as boxers are intelligent, and these dogs are excellent family pets.  They are non-threatening to children and enjoy playful romping and games.  It is a patient breed, meaning that even the picking and poking of a small child will not anger the pet.

The height of a standard boxer ranges from about 21 inches for females to up to 25 inches for males, measured at the withers.  The profile tends to be square, and males have larger bones than females.  One thing you should not expect from this particular breed of dog is shyness.  Boxers are bold and tend to initiate contact with newcomers.
