Bulldog Puppies - A Bullish Breed!

Bulldog puppies make great pets for those who want a loving and loyal yet protective dog.  A bulldog puppy will be great with children and other pets, and its loyalty will make it fearless in situations where it feels there is danger present.

The bulldog was originally bred as a cattle herder in England and is a sturdy dog in the working family.  At one time, the bulldog was actually used cruelly in the sport of bull baiting.  However, this was outlawed in England in 1835, and this more athletic breed of dog was slowly replaced with the bulldog we see today.
 
The descendants of these dogs are now referred to as English bulldogs.  Many immigrants, though, brought their working dogs with them to the American South, where they all but became extinct by the end of World War II.  However, with proper breeding programs, the bulldog breed was revived and is now thriving in the United States, and we now have what is recognized as the American bulldog.  These puppies have become quite popular.

The average puppy will eventually grow to be anywhere from about 20-27 inches high and 60-125 pounds, with females bulldogs being significantly smaller than males of the breed.  Their coat is short and stiff to the touch and should be brushed with a rubber mitt or brush with firm bristles.  This dog has few health issues, and bulldogs are generally a hardy, healthy pet, though some strains of bulldog do have tendencies for hip dysplasia later in life.

Bulldogs are powerful and confident, with an inherent agility, all of which make them such excellent working dogs and protectors.  Their large head and powerful jaws can make them seem intimidating, which they can be in the face of danger.  However, these puppies are tender and affectionate with family, good with children, and loyal loving dogs overall.
