Dachshund Puppies – The Sausage Dog!

With their long bodies and short stature, dachshund puppies are extremely cute and adorable.  A dachshund puppy can be a lot of fun to have around, though they can be hard to train (formal dog training may or may not be affective) and they do have some personality flaws that make them difficult pets for certain people.

There are three different strains of dachshunds, varying in size from 12 to 18 inches in height.  This breed is very playful and tends to be clownish, with outgoing personalities and a penchant for trying to train their owners.  These puppies are very curious and mischievous, and they are compulsive diggers, so do not allow them in gardens or areas of your yard that you wish to remain unaffected.

Due to the dachshund’s small size, it takes little dog food to keep a dachshund fed, and dog supplies are minimal, requiring only one or two small toys and a brush to touch up the dog’s coat at least once a week (long-haired dachshunds should be brushed more often, daily if possible).

These puppies are somewhat protective and do best around older children and adults, with little tolerance for poking and prodding.  Though they get along well with most other dogs, dachshunds also have a jealous, obstinate, and irritable streak that can cause these normally docile dogs to bite without question.

One major health concern is weight – diets should be carefully controlled, as dachshunds are prone to becoming overweight.  Also, because of their long back and short legs, dachshunds easily develop back problems.  Other possible considerations for the dachshund are heart disease, urinary tract problems, and diabetes.  Maintaining a regular healthy diet and providing plenty of exercise can help your puppy stay fit and avoid some of these issues.  A regular daily walk will improve your dachshund’s overall happiness.

If you have the time to devote to your pet and keep the puppy from becoming a lazy overweight dog, you’ll find yourself with an enjoyable, loving companion for the next 12-15 years.  However, if you have small children or travel frequently and cannot take the dog along, perhaps you should put off acquiring a dachshund until your circumstances allow for a better home environment.
