Dog Houses – Are They Really Necessary?

For outside dogs, dog houses are a necessity.  Though a dog house may not be required for an indoor pet, it is still advised to have a shaded area for your dog when it is left in the yard, and a house provides this safe area.

Houses for dogs come in a variety of sizes and materials and can even be built specially by the dog owner or to his standards.  Obviously, the size and detail of the house affects the budget required to build your puppy’s house, but they can range in price from about $40.00 to hundreds.  Custom-built houses are extremely expensive.  Plastic kennels are the cheapest, running anywhere from $30-60, and wooden houses go up from there.

Do-it-yourself kits are available, as well, wherever dog supplies are sold.  Usually, these are wooden houses that can be built with a few nails and a little sweat.

Dogs need spaces of their own, and building a house for your dog can provide the puppy with a sense of security.  For those with indoor dogs, a house can be much less expensive.  Portable tent-like houses are available for under $20, and crates and cages can be purchased at a minimal expense.

When providing a house for your puppy, make sure it is large enough for it to grow into.  A dog should have plenty of room to move around inside its house, and a space for food and water bowls is recommended. 

Some dog owners who seriously dote on their pets will have miniature replicas of their own houses build.  Extravagantly decorative pre-assembled units are also preferred by these pet lovers.
 
Keep in mind, though, that many cities and homeowners’ associations have rules regarding the allowable size and appearance of the house you build for your dog.  After all, what a shame it would be to tease your puppy with such a beautiful gift, only to have to take it right back down!
