Dog Steps – Give Your Dog A Step-Up!

In order for many small dogs to get around in their household environment, dog steps are required.  Dog ramps can also be used to assist small puppies or dogs with short legs or disabilities.  Though some owners prefer that their dogs not be allowed on furniture, the puppies that are small enough to need such assistance are typically lap dogs that spend much of their time on the couch or bed anyway.

Many puppies, especially toy breeds, have difficulty in jumping up onto furniture or into laps.  Their short legs and small stature do not allow them access too many of the areas that they require for comfort.  A set of steps can give your puppy or toy dog the ability to hop up onto your lap without running the risk of injury.

Ramps are also used for disabled dogs.  If your dog has always had access to furniture and, due to an accident or disease, has lost a limb or the ability to jump, it can no longer make its way up to its favorite resting place.  A ramp makes maneuverability much simpler for an injured or disabled puppy.

Even dogs that may be large enough with long enough legs to reach a desired resting spot can benefit from steps or ramps.  If these puppies are constantly jumping into your lap, they might, in fact, injure a muscle or joint.  Allowing these pets the luxury of climbing a few steps or a ramp can avoid such a catastrophe in the future.

When purchasing a ramp or set of stairs for your pet, make sure that the unit is rated for the size and weight of your dog.  It would be terrible to reward your puppy with a hazardous gift.

Also, keep in mind that you will most likely have to train the dog to walk up the steps or ramp before it becomes accustomed to the assistance.  And once you’ve spoiled your puppy to such luxuries, it’ll want to have one of these items in every room of the house!
