English Bull Dogs – A Caring Canine!

Short and thick, English bull dogs are often mistaken for aggressive dogs because of their muscular appearance.  However, an English bull dog is actually one of the gentlest dog breeds there is.  Be aware that, if you wish to purchase a bull dog, it will NOT do well in an outdoor environment.  This breed is meant to be kept inside.

Bull dogs are excellent pets, with a loyal and loving attitude towards their owners.  However, Bull dogs do have tendencies toward several different health problems that need to be monitored.  Many of these dogs have small windpipes and can have breathing issues.  Also, they are very susceptible to temperature, being cold natured and yet prone to heat stroke in hot weather.

Because of an active digestive system, bull dogs can be quite flatulent, so they are not the best dog for people with an overactive sense of smell!  These dogs can also have issues with hips and knees.  However, for pet owners who pay careful attention to their dogs’ health, a pet bull dog can be quite a rewarding choice.

Bull dogs are not very active and do not require a lot of exercise.  In fact, many adult dogs do not need any real exercise at all.  These puppies tend to grow to be between 12 and 16 inches tall, with shorter dogs being more prized in show, and weight usually runs around 50 pounds.

Bull dogs are best as “only children”.  Though they are great with people, understanding their place in the family and being reliable around almost all people, they can get fussy around other dogs, feeling dominant and subscribing to the “Alpha male” syndrome.

Young bull dogs are more energetic, while older dogs become more lethargic and develop snoring and drooling habits.  For dog lovers, this can be an even more endearing quality!
