English Bulldog Puppies – Your Gentle Family Pet.

English bulldog puppies have a bad reputation for being mean and aggressive, due to their appearance.  They are square and muscular, and many people think of them as intimidating.  However, an English bulldog puppy is a wonderfully calm and gentle dog to own, especially for families with small children.

An English bulldog has tendencies to several different health problems, so make sure that, when looking at puppies for sale, you choose a puppy that is healthy from the start.  This will avoid unnecessary health risks in the future.  Bulldogs are sweet and loveable, but you’re sure to spend money on vet bills throughout your dog’s life.  Breathing problems, being prone to heat stroke and hypersensitive to cold temperatures, and development of hip and knee injuries all make it necessary for English bulldog owners to budget for extra care.

Keep in mind that, when searching for your new puppy, bigger is not better.  Smaller dogs are more highly valued in show and tend to be healthier.

As puppies, bulldogs are fun and playful, though over time, they tend to slow down and become heavy sleepers.  Also be aware that English bulldogs will tend to emit unpleasant smells in the atmosphere as they digest their food, but all of these traits can make your aging puppy even more endearing.

Bulldogs typically do not require dog training, though it might be a good idea to socialize your puppy at an early age.  This breed tends to be excellent with humans but doesn’t do well in environments where they must share affection with other dogs.  They exhibit the Alpha male syndrome, acting dominant, and should be socialized if you wish to own more than one dog so that this reaction is minimized.

Regardless, this breed of puppy is simple to care for, besides health issues.  They do not require extensive exercise, and some actually do not enjoy exercise of any kind.  Grooming needs are also minimal.  If you are prepared to provide the health care, a bulldog puppy is a great choice for a first dog!
