Free Puppy – Is It Really Free?

Finding a free puppy is easy; finding the right one is a little more difficult.  Free puppies tend to come from unwanted or unexpected litters conceived when dog owners allow their dogs to roam free. What this means is that you cannot be sure of exactly what you are getting in terms of breeding when you pick out one of these free pups.

However, sometimes you can find a pure bred puppy for free, if you are looking in the right place at the right time.  Of course, you may not mind the idea of a mutt; sometimes, a mixed breed is even more docile and well behaved than other dogs.

If you choose to adopt a puppy for free, the first thing you should do is take it to a vet.  The vet can vaccinate, check the health of, and determine the possible breed mixture of your new puppy.  You should also consider having the puppy spayed or neutered at about six months old to help control the dog population.

Even if you do find a good deal on a free dog, you must remember that you are taking on other financial responsibilities.  Dog supplies, such as collars, leashes, beds, brushes, and sometimes even medication are required to care for the puppy.  Don’t forget the need to eat – the cost of dog food can really rack up.  Be sure you know how large of a dog your new puppy will grow into (this is part of the reason you need to determine what breeds are mixed into the canine’s background).

Keep in mind that an unruly dog can become an issue in the home.  Some breeds of dog do require extensive dog training, and without that, it could easily lead to damage in the house.  So, although not paying for a puppy may seem like a blessing, be sure to complete your research so that you are aware of what you’re getting into before entering into free puppy adoption.
