German Shepherd Dogs – Much More Than A Guard Dog!

Because German shepherd dogs tend to be loyal and protective pets, they have become popular choices for families.  A German shepherd dog is highly intelligent and does well with dog training, making this breed ideal for police work, guard work, and guide dogs.  Though small children must be taught to respect these dogs, they are great with kids and have a great sense of loyalty toward their owners.

German shepherds, however, are often adopted and then discarded, with many owners not realizing that a small puppy becomes a large dog – at least 22 inches tall at the shoulder and up to 90 pounds – which, in turn, is a large responsibility.  So, before purchasing any dogs for sale, seek out an adult dog that needs rescuing.  You could also inquire at the local police department about adopting retired K9 units.

German shepherds are confident dogs, never shy or nervous.  This breed should be fearless in the face of danger and alert to any threats.  Though not hostile, these dogs will not be your best friend immediately.  German shepherds make people work to earn their trust.  However, once you and your dog have bonded, you’ll have a best friend for life.

If you insist on purchasing a puppy, be sure to buy from a reputable breeder.  German shepherds have tendencies toward serious health issues, such as hip dysplasia and eyesight problems, and good dog breeders work hard to keep their dogs as healthily bred as possible.

At the same time, when you do adopt an adult dog, be sure to have him or her checked out by a vet for any health defects that could require a long-term care regimen that is a drain on the pocketbook.  A healthy German shepherd will live anywhere from 10-13 years on average, so be prepared for a long, close relationship with your dog.

German shepherds are excellent pets; they simply have to be carefully cared for by someone who can provide a large enough home environment and an ample amount of love and attention.
