Great Dane Puppies – Your Gentle Giants!

Great Dane puppies are a huge responsibility in both size and care concerns.  If you have the time, energy, and space to raise a Great Dane puppy, you will be rewarded with an intelligent, loving companion for the extent of the dog’s life.

These puppies are a huge undertaking.  By eight weeks of age, Great Danes usually weight around 25 pounds and will grow to be six times that size in adulthood.  Dog food can become expensive, with the average Dane going through about 40 pounds of food each month.  Medication, bedding, and toys for this giant working breed are also more expensive.

When looking at dogs for sale, you should consider adopting an abandoned Great Dane because many people purchase Dane puppies, thinking how cute they are without considering the great size they will reach.  Female Danes should be greater than 28” at the shoulder, and males taller than 32”.  Though these dogs have large frames and heavy bones, they are, in effect, big babies, who retain a puppy-like personality throughout their lives (an average lifespan of about 7-10 years).

If you must buy a puppy, be sure that the breeder is reputable and that the parents are free of health problems.  Due to their size and pure breeding, Danes are prone to many health problems, including hip dysplasia, heart conditions, hypothyroidism, liver diseases, and bloating problems.  If the parents reach 2-3 years of age without signs of these health issues, the puppy is more likely to live a longer, healthier life.

If you have an infant or small child, it is best to adopt an adult Great Dane because they will have grown into their calm, sweet mannerisms and will not endanger a crawling child with their size.

All Danes should be spirited, courageous, protective, and loving.  They are gentle mannered and make excellent house dogs.  If you have the time and motivation to provide a strong companionship, a Great Dane is a perfect puppy for you.
