Hunting Dogs – Hungry For Sport!

One of the breeding classifications recognized by the AKC is the group of hunting dogs.  Any hunting dog, though maintaining its own personality, will share common characteristics with all the breeds in the hunting group.  Spaniels, pointers, retrievers, and setters are typically considered members of the hunting group, and some hounds can also be classified in this manner.

All of these dog breeds have an excellent sense of smell, and all are energetic and ready to go out for the hunt.  These gun dogs have remarkable instincts in both the woods and water.  Canines in this category tend to be a bit restless and require plenty of exercise in order to maintain their health.

Dogs in the hunting group also have an easy time with extensive dog training, as they are intelligent and eager to learn.  When buying a puppy, if you are looking for a playful, loving companion that enjoys being outdoors, you should consider one of these breeds.

When buying dog food for these pets, you might want to consider the varieties marked specifically for high-energy pets.  The additional vitamins and minerals will help to maintain the healthy activity level that the hunting group is known for.

Be sure to have plenty of toys to keep your puppy occupied; gun dogs can become bored easily.  If left to their own devices, these dogs can become troublemakers and be very annoying, constantly begging for attention and play.  So, when buying your dog supplies, make sure to stock up on doggie toys.

Because of their high level of intelligence, eagerness to please, and inherent loyalty to their owners, dogs in the hunting group make fabulous pets.  Their natural instincts also make them viable still as great hunting partners.
