Pitbull Dogs – A Pleasant Pet?

Pitbull dogs are loyal and intelligent dogs.  With the proper dog training and socialization, a pitbull dog can make an excellent family pet.  Pitbulls are terriers with thick, short, shiny hair that come in a great range of size and colors.

The pit bull makes a great obedient companion and is an intelligent dog with the ability to bond with family members.  This breed carries a negative stigma that causes people to find it intimidating, thinking that they are aggressive and prone to attacking without cause.  However, training and socialization bring out the sweet-tempered natural personality of the pitbull and make them great family dogs.

These dogs should typically reach somewhere around 20 inches in height and can weigh anywhere from 30-80 pounds.  Maintenance is important with pit-bulls; a regular brushing with a bristle brush will keep the coat glossy and clean.  Bathing should only occur when necessary.

When purchasing dog supplies, you should purchase a sturdy leash – pit bulls require vigorous exercise but should never be allowed to roam free.  All walks and runs should be supervised on a leash.  Pitbulls enjoy running alongside a bike because it allows them to run and expend excess energy.

This breed should only be purchased either from a reputable dog breeder or, as an adult, should have papers verifying authenticity.  Always have a grown dog checked for mange and heart murmurs, as these are common health concerns for pitbull terriers.  If the pit-bull has already developed such problems, you should be prepared to budget for continued health care, as vet bills for your dog can be expensive.

Try to choose a healthy puppy or dog so in the beginning in order to minimize responsibility.  However, if you have the time and money to rescue a dog that has such health problems, it is a great service and will be a fulfilling effort.
