Shih Tzu Puppies – A Little Lion Of A Dog!

Shih Tzu puppies can be some of the friendliest most loving dogs to handle.  When looking at puppies for sale, Shitzu puppies form easy bonds and make friends quickly, so this small breed may seem like the perfect pet for many different types of people.

The name Shih Tzu literally means “lion dog” and refers to their luxurious long coat of hair.  These dogs are revered in China, where they’ve been bred since the 17th century, and appear in many works of Chinese art.  They are trusting and affectionate, but these puppies also come with strong personalities.

Shitzus are dignified and can be arrogant or even stubborn.  They have an obstinate streak, but with proper dog training, they will respond well to commands.  The most difficult aspect of teaching these puppies to obey could be house training.

This breed is generally good with polite children and makes an excellent family dog, as Shih Tzus need to be with people.  They are also good around other dogs and pets in general, as long as they are socialized early on.  Daily grooming is required, so be sure to include a good bristle brush when purchasing dog supplies for your puppy.

As with many small dog breeds, Shitzus are sensitive to heat and have breathing issues that can cause them to wheeze or snore.  When choosing your puppy, you should also be sure that the body is square; extremely short legs or a long back can cause spinal disc disease.

Other common health issues for Shitzus involve eye and ear infections, early tooth loss (which can be prevented with hard dog food), and a tendency toward obesity (so do not overfeed your dog).  Overall, though, the Shih Tzu is considered a hearty breed that can easily live a good 15 years.
