Small Dog Breeds - Much More Than A Toy!

Many people prefer small dog breeds to larger pets because they require minimal grooming and don't eat nearly as much. Smaller breeds are more agile and make great assistants and companions. Even dog training is usually a breeze with toy dogs. However, there are some disadvantages to small dogs as well.

One of these little pets is usually cuddly and playful with its owner or family. Often, you'll see women carrying teacup and toy breeds, like Pomeranians or Chihuahuas, in purses or bags. As companions, they are some of the most comforting animals and mostly enjoy resting in their owners laps. They tend to be quiet and well-behaved under most circumstances, if trained properly.

However, many of these small breeds are also easily excitable and have a tendency to yip or bark at strangers, as well as to become very jumpy around people outside their immediate family. Sometimes, this causes an issue with neighbors or in public places, distracting and angering individuals. But once again, these animals are extremely pleasant to be around if properly handled.

One of the major advantages of owning a little dog is that it usually does not eat as much dog food as some of the larger breeds. Dog supplies are more easily found for a Chihuahua or Pug than for a Great Dane or Mastiff, as well. Those who live in a compact house or apartment, or who may travel often may prefer a small dog because it is much less crowding and much more easily toted along on trips.

Some of the most popular small breeds found in households in the United States include Pugs, Yorkshire Terriers (commonly referred to as Yorkies), Maltese, and Chihuahuas, though toy poodles, Pekingese, and Shih Tzu puppies are also popular dogs for sale.
