Teacup Puppies – Buy With Care!

When considering puppies for sale, if you are looking at teacup puppies as a possible pet, you should consider the risks involved in owning one.  Teacup dogs can be very rewarding pets, but they also tend to have more health and personality issues than regular sized dogs.

Keep in mind that many breeds are not naturally found in a teacup variety, and much inbreeding has occurred to produce such a small animal.  This can lead to further health risks beyond what is normal in the average dog breed.  After all, the further you get from the ancestral characteristics of the pet, the less likely that pet is to be completely healthy.  Bones are more fragile, and the slightest knock or fall could fracture or cleanly break one of these small animals’ bones.  In most, breed-specific health risks are significantly enhanced.

If you do decide to purchase a teacup puppy, be sure to research the breed of choice thoroughly and only buy from a reputable dog breeder.  Average sized dogs do not do well in puppy mills, and these pets are even less hearty and more likely to be affected by such negative environments.  With a dog breeder, you will be able to research the parental history of your new puppy and inspect the litter, taking your pick, prior to purchasing.

When looking at small breeds, remember that the tiniest is not always the best.  For example, Maltese do not actually come in a ‘teacup’ variety, and it is best not to purchase one that is or will grow to be less than 3-4 pounds; their organs are weak, and their mouths are generally too small for their teeth.  A teacup variety poodle also has serious health risks.  These small dogs can break a leg simply jumping onto or off a piece of furniture.  A round of diarrhea that may not be of concern for an average poodle can put this small pup into the hospital.  They are also prone to hypoglycemia.

Overall, teacups are very cute dogs, but they are also difficult to take care of.  If you do not have a conducive home environment, where safety is of the utmost concern, and you do not have the time to pamper these pets, you may want to consider a larger breed.
