So Many Types Of Dogs – Which Is The Right Dog For Me?
When looking to purchase a puppy, you’ll find that there are almost innumerable types of dogs to choose from. One way to narrow down your choices is to look at the different classifications of dog breeds that are available. The AKC divides dogs into several categories that share distinct traits or backgrounds, making it easier to narrow down your choices.
Sporting dogs are breeds that were meant mostly for hunting purposes. They have an excellent sense of smell and direction, as well as a high loyalty factor. Breeds of spaniels have typically been used to hunt on tough terrain, whereas the Irish Setter’s speed and agility make it an excellent bird dog. The Retriever’s great sense of direction makes it a perfect guide dog.
The hound group has been used to hunt larger game, like elk. These dogs are fiercely loyal and protective. Toy dogs include breeds such as the Shih Tzu and the Chihuahua. Toy breeds are very small and easily handled, eat a lot less dog food, and make great companions for all ages. However, these cuddly puppies are not as sturdy as many larger breeds. While often living longer, they can develop poor health due to malnutrition or from being stepped on, bumped, and kicked by accident.
Terriers were bred for hunting, protecting, and tracking. They have superior hearing and eyesight and, being small or medium sized, do not require special dog supplies or large amounts of dog food. They also respond well and with speed to dog training. The herding group was bred for the sole purpose of herding sheep and cattle. These are intelligent, hard-working dogs; easily trained and willing to please their owners.
The working group is bred to assist human beings and includes mainly sled dogs, like the Siberian Husky. Strong, sturdy, and durable, many of them prefer cooler climates. Other dogs are classified as non-sporting or even giants. These are more specialized dogs with a wide range of personalities.
By studying common traits, you can determine what dog suits you best. Are you looking for a cuddly companion, a hunting partner, or perhaps a puppy with a unique personality? Whatever you like, there are enough breeds of dogs to fulfill your desires!
